Raised in Canberra and living in Berlin for the last ten years, violist Alexina Hawkins will return to Wesley Music Centre with acclaimed pianist Dr. Edward Neeman in the Wednesday Lunchtime series on Wednesday 21 May. Their recital will journey through the rich history of viola music, featuring the contrasting voices of Carl Stamitz (1745–1801) and Béla Bartók (1881–1945).
The program offers a rare opportunity to experience movements from two landmark viola concertos side by side. Carl Stamitz, a prominent figure of the Mannheim School, brings elegance, lyricism and charm to the Classical concerto form with his Viola Concerto in D major. In contrast, Béla Bartók’s Viola Concerto, one of his final compositions, offers a haunting and deeply personal reflection shaped by the turbulence of the 20th century. Left incomplete at his death, the work was finished by his student Tibor Serly and remains a powerful staple of the viola repertoire.
