About the event
Les Adieux and Beethoven's Great Transition
On Wednesday 16th April 2025 from 12.40 to 1.20pm, the Wesley Lunchtime concert series welcomes back the brilliant young pianist Charles Huang in another demanding performance.
A masterpiece from the end of his middle period, Les Adieux Op. 81a was Beethoven's farewell not only to his friend Archduke Rudolph, but also to the way of classical sonata writing he had mastered, expanded and perfected over his entire composing career hitherto. A four-year hiatus ensued before the next Sonata Op. 90 emerged, ushering in a new period – his ultimate quest for the greatest emotional and intellectual expression attainable in a piano sonata. You will hear both these works performed in this concert, along with a selection of works by Johann Sebastian Bach, arguably the single greatest source of influence on Beethoven's late style.
