A Flute Fantasia: from Bach to Bizet and Beyond
On Wednesday 7th August 2024 from 12.40 to 1.20pm, the Wesley Lunchtime concert series welcomes the much-loved pianist Robert Schmidli and the exciting young flutist Liz Minkyung Kim performing J.S. Bach’s Sonata for flute and keyboard in E flat major BWV 1031, Fantasie brillante sur Carmen by François Borne / Georges Bizet, Andante pastoral et scherzettino by Paul Taffanel, and Benjamin Godard’s Suite de trois morceaux.
Robert Schmidli is one of Canberra’s best loved and most talented performers. He began piano studies in New Zealand and later continued in Melbourne. He has performed on local and national radio in New Zealand and Australia, played with a number of orchestras, and worked with international artists including David Pereira, Jack Glatzer and George Zukerman. His solo recitals have been in New Zealand, Victoria, West Australia, country NSW and South Australia. Aside from playing the piano, Robert moonlights as a medical specialist in endocrinology with clinics in Canberra and rural NSW. His photos appear regularly in the local weather segment of ABC News at 7pm. Information on Robert’s other concerts can be found at www.schmidli.com.au.
Liz Minkyung Kim, an expressive and emotionally charged flutist from South Korea, enchants audiences with her delicate and nuanced playing. Following her recital debut as a Kumho Young Artist at Seoul’s Kumho Art Hall, she has collaborated with esteemed ensembles such as the Seoul Academy Ensemble, Tokyo Prime Orchestra, and the Ukraine Sevastopol Symphony Orchestra.
