About the event
Kamala Bain, Robyn Mellor and Ariana Odermatt present a concert of baroque music that highlights the sonorities of two recorders accompanied by harpsichord and with a focus on chaconnes. Purcell’s beautiful Chaconne from his masque Dioclesian, Hotteterre’s Passacaille from his Premiere Suite and the exuberant Bergamasca Variations Over A Bass from the Italian Uccellini, all demonstrate the complexities and capabilities of this supposedly simple compositional form. Works by Bach, Telemann, and the relatively unknown Christoph Schaffrath demonstrate how the recorder rightly earned its name of “sweet flute” in France (flute douce) and Italy (flauto dolce) and how the low sounding voice flute (flute de voix) so expressively sings the French repertoire.
