About the event
Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel created a distinctly French musical language through innovative harmonies, exploring new colors, atmospheres, and a refined use of instrumental timbre. As leading figures of musical Impressionism, they transformed music into an art form akin to painting and poetry—one that suggests rather than declares. Their works evoke landscapes, light, water, and emotion with remarkable subtlety and imagination. Debussy’s language is fluid, dreamlike, and evocative, while Ravel’s is precise, elegant, and brilliantly crafted. Together, they represent two complementary facets of French musical identity. Both composers also redefined piano writing, expanding its expressive and technical possibilities through new textures, pedaling effects, and resonant sonorities. Works such as Clair de lune, La cathédrale engloutie, Pavane pour une infante défunte, and Sonatine have left a lasting mark on the piano repertoire.
