The Exquisite Hour

On Wednesday 12th June from 12:40 to 1:20pm, the Wesley Music Centre Wednesday Lunchtime series presents the gorgeous mezzo-soprano AJ America accompanied by the distinguished Roland Peelman, AM, in their latest exploration of voice and piano. The recital includes works by Frank Nuyts, Lili Boulanger, Maurice Ravel & Francis Poulenc.

AJ America is a performer, conductor and creative producer. She is the Artistic Director of Luminescence Chamber Singers and Children's Choir, and the deputy chair of the Minister’s Creative Council. She grew up in Sydney as a member of the Sydney Children’s Choir and Gondwana Voices and has toured nationally and across the USA, Canada, China and New Zealand. She has recorded for a number of Australian film soundtracks, including as a soloist for PJ Hogan’s Mental and Baz Luhrman’s Australia. In 2012, both her vocal performances and choral composition were nominated for Encore. AJ appears regularly as a soloist and a consort singer in Sydney and Canberra, performing with the Luminescence Chamber Singers, the Choir of St James’ King St, Cantillation, Pinchgut Opera and Vox Plexus (Melbourne). She is a regular collaborator with pianist Ella Luhtasaari and guitarist Minh Le Hoang, and a member of Ampleya, a multimedia collaboration with pianist and composer Rasa Daukis and visual artist Genevieve Swifte. In recent years, AJ has also served as the Musical Director of Canberra Community Chorale, the ANU School of Music H-Course Vocal Ensemble, and Director of Choirs at Radford College. In 2017, AJ completed her PhB with Honours in History. In her spare time, AJ is a casual academic with strong ties to the ANU, teaching and as a research assistant.

Artistic Director of the Canberra International Music Festival since 2015, Roland Peelman AM is also a conductor, pianist and mentor. He has received numerous accolades for his commitment to the creative arts in Australia, including his 25-year directorship of the Song Company (1990-2015). His final CIMF (30 April to 5 May) is taking place under the thematic title of Mulanggari, meaning ‘alive’. Over a 25 year period, Roland transformed the Song Company into one of Australia’s most outstanding and innovative ensembles, instigating and directing an impressive list of new orchestral, vocal, and operatic works. Prior to the Song Company, Roland worked with Opera Australia for seven years (1984-91). He was also the Music Director of Sydney Metropolitan Opera (1989-94) and the Hunter Orchestra in Newcastle (1990-97). He is currently official artistic mentor to Luminescence.
